What is a good affordable vacuum to buy that works on all floor types?

Me and my bf need a good vacuum with good suction that works on carpet and hard floors. We don't have much to spend on one so the cheaper the better. Thanks!

   I've had good luck with a couple of the Bissell models. However, I was warned that the red Lift off one and the Pet Hair eraser models didn't work that well. I have the model from Wal-Mart that was less than $100 and it worked well and I also have the more expensive ($250) Healthy Home and I like them both. I prefer the Healthy Home because it has the much better HEPA filters, longer hose, tools are easier to use. But the cheaper model kept up with the pet hair well when that was all I had!

   Look at a couple different models; read the reviews in a couple of web sites and then decide.

   In the past year I have bought both a new Kirby Sentria & a Rainbow Cleaning System (The new Blue/Silver) one. Do not get me wrong, they both clean like crazy, however, each one has its flaws.

   The Kirby is heavy as all get out and the attachments have not been used since the demo.

   The Rainbow I love, but I hate messing with the water. My maid service uses it and the carpets always look amazing.

   I tell you what I bought that I really like and it can pick up dirt IMMEDIATELY after having vacuumed with both the Rainbow and the Kirby. It's a Eureka from Wal-Mart.

   The Eureka is medium weight (not as light as an Oreck), and it will clean in circles around my old Hoover. I am super pleased with it and it was less than $150.

   Finally, I also have a Dyson and I HATE IT. Doesn't fluff the carpet up and the bagless canister dumps a dust cloud every time I emptied it.
